Jobs for Writers: Blogging
Blogging presents another opportunity to make money from writing. There are two ways to go about this:
1) Create and monetize your own blog
- Create your site: You will need to have some tech skills to create a blog page online, and if you want to have your own domain name (the name of your website in your web address) there are costs associated with this. Many websites (like Webnode; Wordpress; Wix etc.) allow you to create a website for free, and they give you templates to chose from that will design the look and feel of your pages. Be aware though that often your options are limited in the free versions.
- Generate the content: Set a blogging schedule and stick with it, so that your followers will know when to expect new content. Your content needs to offer something that is unique, and interesting, or have a novel approach to a subject.
- Promote your blog: you need to have people reading your blog, in order to for any advertising on your blog to pay. You have to work at marketing the site to achieve this.
- Monetise your blog. The main way to do this is to use advertising from major sites. Amazon Associates allow you to advertise Amazon products, and if anyone buys from Amazon through your site, you get a small commission. Google Ad Sense works by placing adverts on your site, and you generate an income based on people clicking on the advert. You can read more in this blog.
- Additional ways to make money through your blog are to sell items; write your own books and courses and sell them through your site, or ask for donations or sponsorship on Patreon.
2) Get paid to write for someone else's blog (Ghostwriting)
If you do have your own blog, you'll rapidly discover that it is hard work, and the rewards can be quite small. However, many bloggers and companies will pay someone else to write their blogs. You will need to ensure that your article fits with the style and content of the site, and follow the guidelines given. You do need to understand Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as this is how blogs earn their money, so you have to write something that will be found via a web search. Upwork: offers a range of freelance jobs as does Fiverr and other similar freelance sites.
Writing for other blogs will give you good experience for when you're ready to start your own blog, but will also help build your portfolio as a writer.
