Writing Prompt: Pictures in Time

09/13/2019

The time in which your work is set is integral to the piece - it shapes and moulds it. In today's selection of Picture Prompts, I will be looking at images set in time, which I hope will inspire you to write.

Time is important in your writing. Think through the questions and comments. Look at the images  selected from Pixabay. I hope that they will plant the seed of an idea that you can turn into a story: .

  • Are you writing about the past, future, present, or an alternative version of any of these? These can provide restraints to your, work or a challenge to work around. The Victorians didn't have cell phones, so unless your piece is in an alternative Victorian age, then they should not appear in your story.
  • If you're writing sci-fi and fantasy, there is an opportunity to bend the rules, but even so, readers will complain if you break them or write in any anachronisms.
  • If you're writing about the future, is a dystopia, or utopia - will we wreck the planet or save it?
  • Is your story focused on a specific festival or season or event? Easter / Christmas / Halloween (Remember magazines work at leat 3 months in advance of seasonal stories)
  • How long does it take for the events to unravel? If your main character is walking from one place to another, you need to ensure you check how long the journey would take. Even if you create your own worlds, there should be consistencies in how long it takes for events to happen.
  • Considering the time of your story will set many details for you, such as weather, clothing, activities as well as your characters.

Have fun writing!
